{ things i loved this week }

june 15th, 2012

birthday weekend in NOLA was a success, despite the downpours, hot/humid weather, and the usual travel troubles. the city is so full of life but still seeing the effects from Hurricane Katrina. it’s an interesting mix of people, things to-do, history, culture and of course food!

{ champagne waiting in our room at the royal sonesta }

{ I was teased at the miami airport with rows and rows of french macarons…and no one to sell them to me. finally got some at a popular NOLA bakery called sucre on magazine street }

{ I had my own stationery. I felt very important }

{ we got caught in a crazy rainstorm. attorney john fox was our shelter savior }

{ there are antique stores galore in the french quarter and on royal street…the hubs and I found some amazing bar sets and I could’ve stared at the ceiling for hours on end }

{ a pink flowered tree. just pretty. }

{ a typical new orleans house with beautiful trees in front }

{ crazy good pork belly sandwich + homemade potato chips at cochon butcher }

{ still perkin’ makes a mean coffee granita }

{ a wedding was being broken down and this was such a beautiful chuppah/canopy }

{ another highlight at cochon butcher…seeing actor jonah hill }

{ a pub called the bulldog…with a waterfall made out of beer taps! }

{ i’m now wholeheartedly obsessed with abita’s seasonal strawberry beer. it’s like pete’s wicked strawberry blonde’s better looking older brother. }

{ bloody marys with spicy green beans and tableside bananas foster at new orleans mainstay brennans. not pictured were perhaps the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had. and I’ve had a lot. }

{ the hubs’ favorite painting in our hotel room. it’s called “bird watching”. get it? }

{ piggy banks at cute boutique on magazine street called hazelnut. if I lived in new orleans and could get married again, I would register here. }

{ cafe du monde for beignets and cafe au lait…twice. enough said }

{ bourbon street…doesn’t matter whether it was Saturday or Tuesday, it’s always busy. I particularly loved our beers from the alley “bar” }

{ gorgeous antique jewelry }

{ oysters at arnauds followed by a tour of their mardi gras museum and private rooms used during prohibition. pretty cool stories about locked rooms and “coffee” being served. }

{ my greatest fear is the depths of the ocean and what lies within them. whales are not my friends. this mural in front of the aquarium scares me. }

{ as clark griswold said… “ahh that’s the Mississippi, the mighty Miss, the old miss, the old man. deeep river.” }

{ vintage movie lamps that I wanted to take home }

all in all, it was a great trip. I’ll leave you now with some beautiful pics taken by my brother jesse, a professional photographer, who helped out some couples back in january who had lost their wedding albums in hurricane katrina.

{ thanks dad }

men aren’t the easiest to shop for. in fact, they can be near impossible { and that’s coming from someone who loves to give gifts }. there are only so many ties, golf gear, bbq accessories and liquor one can get right? here are some unique ideas for the man in your life, whether father, husband, sibling or friend…many can double as a “thank you dad” gift on your wedding day!

{ for the outdoor lover } for just $35 at happy feet, his tired soles will be given the royal reflexology treatment (and bonus neck + back massage!)

{ for the book + art lover } jane mount ideal bookshelf prints. ready-made versions are available but for a “wow” gift, give him an IOU and order a customized print with his favorite books.

{ for the booze enthusiast } glass liquor bottles filled with their favorite liquors { I recommend at least one being a port or vin santo } customized with personalized stoppers and labels

{ for the sporty type } sure, tickets are always appreciated but gemini studio art by stephen fowler is just plain cool

{ for the wannabe chef } le creuset cookware in a “manly” color. yes, they do want it.

{ for the tech geek…and environmentalist! } freeloader pro solar charger complete with camcaddy for camera battery charging. powers virtually any electronic device no matter where he is.

{ for the aspiring photographer } guys don’t like to carry much around. this hammacher schlemer camera (billed as the world’s smallest camera) weighs just 1/2 ounce and fits right on his finger!
